All Aboard for Oregon: A Scenic Amtrak Train Journey to Eugene
Updated October 5, 2026

A train trip to Oregon can be part of the vacation itself: time to settle into your seat, watch the scenery, and leave the driving to someone else. Now, travelers have a new reason to consider arriving by rail. Amtrak’s first Airo trains entered passenger service on the Amtrak Cascades route on September 30, 2026, bringing new equipment to the corridor connecting Eugene, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, British Columbia.
A Rail Adventure Through the Willamette Valley
The journey south from Portland is an invitation to slow down. As the train travels through the Willamette Valley, farmland, small communities, and wooded stretches take their turns outside the window. Instead of watching the traffic ahead, you can watch Oregon unfold around you. Bring a book, share the ride with a friend, or simply settle in and let the scenery set the pace.
For visitors arriving from Seattle or farther north, continuing to Eugene adds another chapter to a Pacific Northwest rail adventure. You can spend the journey reading, catching up on business or simply unwinding, then step off the train ready to discover the southern Willamette Valley. The pleasure of the trip begins well before your first tour.

Eugene: More Than a Stop at the End of the Line
Eugene makes a rewarding destination in its own right, with places to eat, shop, and explore before venturing farther afield. Spend some time getting to know the city, then use it as a base for wine country, forest trails, and the coast. A few days here give you room to enjoy different sides of Oregon without changing accommodation every night.
All Aboard for Waterfall Hikes, Wine Tasting, Covered Bridges and More!
At Best Oregon Tours, we’re excited about connecting that rail journey with the places we love sharing. Arrive in Eugene, settle into town, and let a local guide take you beyond the station. Here are a few ways to continue the adventure.
Get to Know Eugene
Our Eugene City Highlights Tour introduces you to the city’s character, from the University of Oregon campus and Fifth Street Public Market to Skinner Butte and local neighborhoods. It’s a welcoming first outing for visitors who want to get their bearings and discover places to return to during their stay.
Follow the Waterfalls into the Cascades
Our Cascades Adventure Tour heads toward the McKenzie River and Oregon’s mountain landscapes, with waterfall stops such as Sahalie and Koosah Falls. Forest walks and rushing water offer a memorable change of scene after your train ride. Stops vary with the season and road conditions.
Taste the Willamette Valley
On our Willamette Valley Wine Tour, visit local wineries with a guide who can introduce you to the region and its wines. With transportation included, you can focus on the tasting and the conversation while we handle the driving.

Spend a Day on the Oregon Coast
Our Central Oregon Coast Tour takes you from Eugene toward Florence and coastal landmarks such as Heceta Head Lighthouse. Trade the valley scenery for ocean views and a day exploring the Pacific shoreline.
Discover Oregon’s Covered Bridges
Our Covered Bridge Adventure Tour explores historic wooden bridges around Cottage Grove, with time for photographs and stories about the communities they served. It’s an opportunity to follow some of Oregon’s quieter roads and appreciate a different part of the region’s history.
A Few Practical Questions Before You Board
What are Amtrak’s new Airo trains?
Airo is Amtrak’s new generation of trainsets, with Cascades the first route to welcome them into passenger service. The rollout began with two trainsets operating four daily trips, and more will join the route gradually. For visitors, the appeal is an updated onboard experience along a familiar Northwest rail corridor.

Where do the new trains travel?
Airo trains are joining the existing Amtrak Cascades corridor, which stretches from Eugene, Oregon, to Vancouver, B.C. Major destinations include Portland, Tacoma, and Seattle. In Oregon, Cascades serves Eugene, Albany, Salem, Oregon City, and Portland.
Check the itinerary for your departure, since not every train covers the full corridor. Once you arrive in Eugene, guided day trips can take you onward to wineries, waterfalls, covered bridges, and the coast.
What is different inside the trains?
The most noticeable changes are in the passenger experience. Airo interiors include ergonomic seating with adjustable headrests, large windows, updated lighting, and digital information displays. The trains retain the Cascades evergreen, cream, and mocha colors, with design details inspired by the region’s mountains.
Travelers can also expect complimentary Wi-Fi, power outlets, and USB charging. Keep your phone charged for arrival and spend the journey reading, catching up on business or simply unwinding.
Accessibility improvements include accessible seating, automated steps, clearer wayfinding, and spacious restrooms with touchless controls. If you need boarding assistance or specific accommodations, review Amtrak’s accessibility information before booking so you can arrange the support your trip requires.
Are the new trains faster?
The new equipment does not mean Cascades is suddenly a high-speed rail service. Although Airo trains are capable of speeds up to 125 mph, Amtrak Cascades currently operates at a maximum of 79 mph. The corridor shares tracks with freight trains, and higher speeds would require infrastructure upgrades.
For trip planning, use the published travel time for your departure. The immediate reason to try Airo is the updated onboard experience; do not assume that a new train means a substantially shorter journey.
How do I book a ride on an Airo train?
Search your travel dates and stations on Amtrak.com or in the Amtrak app. Amtrak marks departures scheduled to use Airo equipment with a “New Train” tag.
At launch, the designated services were trains 503 and 508 between Seattle and Eugene, and trains 516 and 519 between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. Equipment assignments can change for operational reasons, so check the booking information for your actual travel date rather than relying only on a train number.
Is food available onboard?
Yes. The new trains have a redesigned café featuring food and drinks inspired by the Pacific Northwest, including regional beer, wine, and spirits. It gives travelers another way to enjoy the journey without needing to pack every snack or meal.
Check the current menu for your trip, especially if you have dietary requirements.

Can I take the train to Eugene and explore Oregon without renting a car?
Yes—with a little planning, you can arrive in Eugene on Amtrak Cascades and use guided day trips to explore beyond the city. At Best Oregon Tours, that’s one of the possibilities we’re most excited about: welcoming guests who want to experience Oregon without spending their vacation behind the wheel.
Choose a tour that fits your interests and leave time to enjoy Eugene between outings. Guided transportation can take you beyond the city, while your accommodation location and confirmed pickup arrangements will help you plan the rest of your stay.
We suggest arriving the day before your tour and staying overnight in Eugene, giving yourself time to settle in without a tight connection. Before booking, contact us with your travel dates, lodging, and tour interests so we can confirm availability and pickup options.
As the new fleet rolls out, we’re exploring how our tour schedules, pickup options, and trip-planning resources could better serve guests arriving by rail. We love sharing the places that make Oregon special, and we’re excited about helping more travelers connect the train journey with the experiences waiting beyond the station.
All aboard!
